WONAGO Lecture Series

This lecture examines the expanding relations between Iran and Venezuela despite not being natural allies. Dr. Eric Lob argues that the proximity of these relations is predicated on changing presidents, postures, and pressures during different periods. From a policy perspective, these relations are reinforced by the imposition and intensification of US sanctions as the unintended consequence of a coercive wedge strategy.

The Arab Uprisings and the Return of Repression

This widely cited and currently most-read article in Mediterranean Politics provides a concise overview of how the Arab uprisings changed repression in Arab states on the one hand. On the other hand, it points to lacunae in existing repression research and lines out several approaches and themes that are becoming relevant in researching repression in the MENA and beyond.
